What Is A Numismatic Coin?

Definition: A type of coin that typically has a higher value then the face value on the coin, due to historical information about the coin. Coins that are considered rare or considered ancient will often have a significantly higher monetary value than the suggested value. Numismatic coins are highly coveted by coin collectors because of their history and potential value.

Rarity and condition are key elements in establishing the value of a coin. Rarity is much easier to establish, because there is widespread agreement on the rarity of most coins. Evaluating condition is more of a challenge.

There are three top graders that are highly respected by coin collectors today:

1. In 1972, ANACS was established making it Americas oldest grading service. It was created by the American Numismatic Association (ANA) in order to correct to urgent problem of counterfeit and altered coins that were plaguing the coin community. Washington was chosen as the home of ANACS in order to utilize the Smithsonian’s Numismatic Collection and to be near the Treasury Department, specifically the Secret Service.

2. In 1985, a small group of the nation’s leading coin experts recognized that for the rare coin industry to realize its potential, some serious problems needed to be addressed. Over the course of many months of meetings, the blueprint for the Professional Coin Grading Service evolved. The advent of the third-party appraisal of a coin’s physical condition, backed by a guarantee, and a national network of reputable coin dealers could provide an extremely reliable form of protection for rare coin collectors. PCGS would create a climate in which consumers could participate in the coin market with greater confidence.

3. In 1987, Numismatic Guaranty Corporation  (NGC) was founded and raised coin grading to a whole new level. NGC’s unique approach is to have each coin evaluated by a minimum of three full-time grading experts with decades of experience. The graded coin is designated with its NGC grade, attribution and registration number, then it is sonically sealed in NGC’s secured holder, providing protection and easy storage. NGC-certified coins offer guaranteed authenticity and grading expertise so that collectors may buy and sell even the most expensive coins with greater confidence.

There have been many other graders popping up in the world, however they do not have any backing. For all we know they could be a guy in his mom basement grading coins just to make a few bucks. If you are new to coin collecting these are the three graders you can trust, and I would highly advise only buying coins with these gradings.

For your convenience Numis Network provides MS70 coins from all three graders! Take a look at our store today for some wonderful and competitive prices.
